III.   Cultural “Savvy” – Understanding the System

Besides learning more vocabulary and how to “sound right” when speaking and writing English, at McLeod you will learn more about how Canadian culture works.  You might learn why people behave the way they do in common situations; what unstated expectations Canadians have of others in more formal situations such as classrooms and at work; and how to make fuller use of the many services available to you as a new Canadian. Your McLeod program will help you develop your “cultural savvy” and your Canadian cultural skills, so you will become comfortable in a wider range of situations. You will be a better problem-solver – and opportunity-finder -- in all aspects of your life in Canada.

We hope that the immediate pay-off for you will be in your academic success – that your “marks” in your McLeod courses will be higher than they would have been otherwise, and that you will then be more qualified for job advancement or post secondary study. Understanding more about the Canadian “way of doing things” though will also help you in your day-to-day life.
