VI        Cross Cultural Awareness

i.        Introduction

You may be wondering how all the different backgrounds of your students will affect your class, your teaching and your students’ learning.  There is no doubt that to contribute most fully to the success of your students, you will need to gain greater understanding of all your students and their needs.

Initially, let’s use the term culture quite loosely – we’re not just talking about what people eat or if they avert their eyes when they speak to you.  We’re talking more broadly, in terms of background.

Text Box: What does culture mean to you?

How much do you think our CULTURE affects our BELIEFS? What about our ACTIONS?

How do we show our culture?

Did you think about your clothes? The type of car you drive? The activities you and your family take part in? Your hairstyle?

What are some groups that display a culture?

Did you consider your own family? Your workplace? Your neighbourhood or the type of home you live in? where you went to school?

Do following simple exercise and see if you are surprised.
