Teacher’s Notes

Procedure:

1.     Select a story with complex characters.  Prepare the students by asking them to think about the qualities of some of the stronger characters.  If they have been keeping a journal or log, they may use this to refer to their responses to certain characters.

2.     Draw several geometric shapes on the board:  circle, triangle, oval, rectangle, square, cylinder…)  Ask students to consider what types of personality each shape suggests to them.

3.     List the characters in the text you want the students to discuss.  Have the students choose three characters and ask them to devise a shape to represent each character.  Have them write the character’s name in the shape.

4.     In the middle section of the paper, have students group the shapes, keeping in mind that the placement and size of the shapes should show the relationships of the characters to one another.

5.     On the board, have some students draw and explain their geometric shapes.  Have them justify the shape, placement and size.

6.     Students can use arrows, dotted, jagged lines, varying shades to better explain the relationships.

7.     Have the students write about what their geometric design represents about each character.  Have them explain the colour, shape, size, and placement using specific details from the story or novel.

Lesson Extension

1.      The character analysis could be used as a basis for an essay outline.

2.      Instead of identifying qualities of a character, students could identify motivations of a particular character as preparation for writing an essay.

Follow-up / Transfer Activities:

1.      Could be used to explore process and relationships in many ways, for instance, skills, resume, employment.

2.      Instruct students on using www.paragraphpunch.com , a program on the internet designed to guide users through the steps of writing a paragraph.

3.      Instruct students on how to use a metacognitive journal to record thoughts and feelings; and to analyze the processes experienced. (see Metacognition)
