Procedure 1.
Answering set questions: ü Divide the class into
teams of equal numbers (approx 5 students per team) ü Instruct teams to select
one person to be the team representative, to bring his/her completed
worksheet to you for checking. ü Handout the
multiple-choice questions (one copy per student). ü Instruct teams to
complete the worksheet as quickly as possible. ü Each student records
answers on his/her own paper. ü Team members discuss
the questions and come up with group consensus for each answer. ü Allow each team as many
chances as necessary to correct wrong answers. ü All teams stop when one
team has completed all 10 questions correctly. ü At this time, tally
points for each team (1 point for each correct answer). ü Teams continue working on
correcting wrong answers until each team has completed all 10, OR
– elicit the correct answers from the whole class and instruct students to
correct their work. 2. Writing challenge questions ü Instruct each team to create 3 multiple
choice questions as a challenge to each of the other teams. ü Remind students to work together as
a team and use tips for group discussion. ü Each team member writes his/her own
copy of the team’s questions on a separate piece of paper. Team representatives bring the completed
questions to you for checking. ü Award a possible 3 points per
question: grammar, spelling and
clarity of meaning. 3. Answering other teams’
questions ü As teams finish writing
their questions, they will exchange one question paper with another
team. Instruct teams to answer the
questions and the representative will bring to you for checking, ü Award 2 points for each
correct response. One bonus point
to the creators of any questions answered incorrectly. Teams
continue exchanging until they have answered each team’s questions. 4. Wrap up ü Fifteen minutes before
the class ends total scores and award prizes (optional). ü Review questions that had been difficult to answer; answer further questions about the book. |

Lesson Extension Group discussion skills: see Communication & Social Skills lessons and suggested resources. Multiple choice questions: see teacher reference page attached: Constructing Multiple Choice Test Items Bonus points for questions: see scoring sheets attached Total scores: see scoring sheets attached Prizes: awarding prizes to adults may seem ridiculous, but it is amazing how a simple prize such as a piece of wrapped candy for each team member will put an extra edge to the competition! Follow-up / Transfer Activities: 1.
Select questions that were difficult to answer and have
teams discuss why they were difficult (analyze for content, clarity,
creativity of choices offered, etc.). 2.
Assign students to re-write each correct answer in the
form of a topic sentence and write a paragraph detailing one of their answers
(see Topic
Sentences and Content Points). 3.
Use this multiple-choice activity in other content areas. 4.
Students will be prepared to complete multiple-choice
quizzes in other content areas. |
